Choosing a Quality Disc Jockey

Choosing a quality DJ is one of the hardest tasks in planning an event. It can be very tempting to select the DJ who has the cheapest price. However, you should know that all DJ's are not created equal.

How do you choose a quality DJ with the variety of prices and disc jockeys present in today's market? The answer is simple… Price, Appearance, Experience, Personality / Interaction, Pre-Event Planning, Music Library, Equipment, Contracts / Reliability, and References!

Pricing can vary depending upon the month, day, time, event length, location, size of the event, and DJ availability. For example: April thru June, September thru October, and December are peak months for DJ's. Friday's & Saturday's are in more demand than Sunday thru Thursday, and evening events after 7:00 PM are more popular than afternoon events. Most events average four hours. Location is also a price factor if it is a difficult venue to load into or out of, or if parking is an issue. Size of the event venue, or the number of guests expected at the event, can also affect the price by adjusting the amount of equipment needed by the DJ to provide quality sound coverage. And, of course the popularity of certain DJ's can have a direct affect on the price they command.

Disc Jockeys vary from radio personalities & club jocks, to private event mobile disc jockey's, all with different personalities and talent. You want a quality professional DJ with both great equipment & personal appearance. You want a DJ that has experience performing for your type of event, with a personality that fits with your event theme & the guests who will be attending. You need to decide what type of DJ you want for your event… Do you want a DJ that is someone who stays in the background playing music or do you want someone who is going to interact & energize your guests? You need a Company & DJ that is willing to help you plan your event music needs and itinerary so that you don't have to worry about the music that is being played or the flow of the event. Your DJ should always be reliable and backed up by a Legal Contract. There are two ways to judge the Company & DJ you are considering. First is Reputation. Ask friends, family & coworkers, who they would recommend in the area. Second is References. Make sure that anyone you are considering offers to give you references for the type of event you are hosting, references that you can call to talk and ask questions of. If they don't offer, simply mark them off your list, as this is usually an indicator that they do not want you to check them out!
